Mileage is the key factor on which a user buys a bike nowadays keeping the rising fuel prices in mind. Here are some of the tips to increase your bikes mileage and to maintain your engine in a healthy condition.
- Always make sure you do not open throttle the bike in the first 3-5km. When the engine is cold, the engine is devoid of any oil to lubricate itself and making the engine work hard when it’s cold would accelerate the rate of wear and tear.
- Use the choke in the morning for few minutes and allow the engine to idle for about 2 min. It would allow the engine to warm up sufficiently and the oil would have lubricated and reached the parts.
- Avoid sudden braking and constant changing of gears. Use engine braking and give yourself enough time to brake gradually and coming to a stop. Do not keep changing gears try to move everything in your bike in a gradual linear line.
- Top up engine oil at regular time intervals. The time interval depends on what type of oil you‘ve put. A mineral oil would last up to 1000km to the max and a semi synthetic up to 2500km. These do differ on many factors such as riding style, weather, engine temperature etc.
- Keep the air pressure up to the company specified limits all the time. A tyre with the right tyre pressure would provide less drag i.e. friction thereby improving mileage.
- Switch of your bike in signals. Nowadays most signals show the time for the signal to go green. Try to start your engine about 5 seconds to go before green.
These steps would ensure you get the optimum performance from your engine at the same time giving you a good mileage. A healthy engine always returns a good mileage. The officially declared mileage of the bikes at January 2010 as per the SIAM can be seen in the links provided.
