Tips To Improve Your Bikes Performance

We all crave for that extra little power don’t we? Performance mods have become a common thing among youngsters who wanna exploit the full potential of their bikes. There are compromises like decrease in fuel economy, engine wear and tear. It’s up to you to find the right balance between performance and engine longevity. Thanks to the expanding bike market, aftermarket product companies like TwoBrothers, NGK, K&N and other local aftermarket exhausts. The budget depends on what kinda mod and to what extent you are willing to go. Mind you the extra power you get is usually little and not huge gains, say a few BHP, so don’t expect your Pulsar to run like a Hayabusa.

Now the performance increase can be done in two ways; you install aftermarket products or tamper with the engine. The latter one is irreversible so think many times before you proceed. Here are some of the best known methods

  1. Installing K&N Air Filter will increase the performance and give a throaty exhaust note. Air filter basically allows air to the carburettor and K&N does a no different job except that the air quality and quantity is more by using this. This means the carburettor must be re-jetted which is increasing the quantity of fuel to compensate for the increased air intake. Care to be taken while doing this as wrongly tuned carburettor will result in terrible mileage and other complications.

  2. Next logical step will be to upgrade your stock sparkplugs to iridium ones. These have a higher melting point than the stock ones. Also gives out a much better spark to combust the mixture. Changing sparkplugs DO NOT increase performance in any way, it just aids in better combustion and throttle response. Changing to better sparkplug cable like the Spitfire cables will help.

  3. Remove saree guard and other extra fittings. These can reduce the weight by at least 4kgs and lesser weight always improves performance.

  4. Use High-performance aftermarkets exhausts. Any change in input must be proportionally compensated in the output as well. There are so called high performance canisters available locally as well but it’s better to stay away from them as they only increase the exhaust note and no performance as such.

  5. Use high performance engine oils such as Motul and Shell ones. They do not increase the performance as such but engine needs good lubrication and cooling when its performance is increased due to higher working temperature and pressure.

The above mentioned are the external mods that can be done but tampering with the internals requires expertise, experience so do not attempt these if you think you are incapable.

  1. Reboring the engine will increase the stroke volume and naturally will produce more power. In simple terms we increase the capacity (cc) of the engine. Along with reboring a suitable piston should be used.

  2. Change clutch plates if they are old. This will work wonders if the bike is old, worn out clutch plates tend to decrease the original performance of the bikes as the power is transmitted only through the clutch. They don’t increase the performance but restore the bike to its peak performance condition similar to sparkplugs.

These are some of the best possible methods to extract the maximum from your engine and before modding make sure you read the manual and find right specs and grade of your bikes requirement.
