Tips to maintain your bike

Bike as a whole is made up of many mechanical linkages and moving/rubbing parts, even a minute problem if left unattended may aggravate and cause a bigger one. Here are few tips to maintain your bike at its best condition.

  1. Always clean your bike periodically to make sure dust, mud doesn’t get settled. If it’s a rainy season always cover your bike using a good plastic cover. Clean it three or four times a week using a standard cleaning solution. After 10 min using a dry cloth wipe the bike again.

  2. Engine oil must be changed after regular intervals. The interval may vary depending upon carious factors such as riding style, climate, grade and type of oil etc. Refer your bike manual for the grade of the oil and top up accordingly. Mineral oil usually lasts 1000km and semi synthetic lasts 2000km.

  3. Nowadays most of the bikes come with an open chain therefore the chain is constantly in direct contact with water, dirt etc. The situation is worsened during rainy condition. WD40 sprays are the best, use them to clean and they last for a pretty long time. The chain should be tightened to the right tension for freely transmitting the power to the rear.

  4. Brakes must always be in top notch condition and it is important that there is right amount of free play in the brakes. In case of disc brakes, the brake should give a crisp response when it is applied. If the brakes feel sluggish and lack the bite, air bleeding can be done.

  5. Oil and air filter have to be cleaned and the time interval depends on the type of conditions you ride. Dusty conditions require cleaning often because dirt tends to settle pretty quickly in filter. Air filter is an important part of the bike as it filters the unwanted particles to send relatively clean air for the engine to respire. Same applies to oil filters, oil is used to lubricate as well as cool the engine and cleaning them frequently would ensure the engine performs at its right temperature and efficiency all the time.

  6. Do not leave the bike standing under hot sun.

  7. Always maintain the manufacturer recommended air pressure value in the tyre.
