Engine oil is one of the most important things that we often tend to overlook. The engine oil has several functions such as lubricating, cleaning the inside and cooling the engine. Any compromise in engine oil will lead to accelerated wear and tear of engine and ultimately engine failure.
The important term we need to understand while talking about the engine oil is the viscosity. Viscosity in lay man terms just refers to the thickness and ability of the oil to flow. There are three major varieties of oil we get here; mineral, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic. Mineral oil loses their viscosity sooner than the synthetic ones and cooling properties are also less. Synthetic oils are specially made to last longer and provide better cooling; naturally they last longer and are more efficient. The general thumb rule is that mineral oil is good to use for about 1500kms and synthetic ones for about 3000kms. Here are the top five engine oils we recommend to use in your bike and do check the oil grade of your bike manual before buying one.
- Motul 300V 10w40,15w50(fully synthetic)
- Gulf pride 4t 20w40 (semi synthetic)
- Castrol Power 1 15w40 (semi synthetic)
- Shell Advance Ultra 10W40 (fully synthetic)
- PETRONAS Sprinta 4T 2000 20W40(semi synthetic)
